How to Activate Windows 11, Step by Step
An unactivated copy of Windows 11 still runs, but it shows a watermark, locks personalization and keeps reminding you that a license is missing. To activate Windows 11 you need a key that matches the installed edition (Home or Pro) and an internet connection. Here is the full process, how to check it worked, and how to fix the common errors.
Step 0: check which edition is installed
Open Settings › System › About and look at “Edition”. This is the most common cause of failed activations:

Activate Windows 11 with a product key
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to System › Activation.
- Next to “Change product key”, click Change.
- Type the 25 characters of your key.
- Click Next, then Activate.
It takes a few seconds. If the key changes the edition (Home to Pro), Windows downloads the extra features and restarts — your files and apps stay in place.
During a clean install
When installing from a USB drive, setup asks for a product key. Enter it right away or click “I don’t have a product key” and activate later from Settings. In that case, make sure you pick the right edition from the list.
Check that it worked
Under System › Activation, the status should read “Windows is activated with a digital license”. For more detail, open Command Prompt and type:
slmgr /xpr— shows whether activation is permanent;slmgr /dli— shows the edition and the last five characters of the key.
If you sign in with a Microsoft account, the digital license is linked to it. After a motherboard replacement, the activation troubleshooter can then reactivate the PC.
