Proven release, 16 cores, 2 VMs, supported until 2031.
A Windows Server license for the Standard edition is assigned per physical core, with a minimum of 16 cores per server. It allows two Windows Server virtual machines on top of the host. Client Access Licenses (CALs) are counted separately, per user or per device.
Servers with one or two processors and up to 16 cores — most machines in a small office — are covered by a single license. Only larger machines or more than two virtual servers need extra licensing.
Windows Server 2025, supported until 2034, brings hotpatching, a modernized Active Directory and SMB over QUIC. Windows Server 2022 is still the right choice if your software is only certified for it; it is supported until October 2031.
It installs on a physical x64 server or in Hyper-V, VMware and Proxmox. Desktop Experience gives the familiar graphical interface; Server Core reduces the attack surface and updates, at the cost of command-line or Windows Admin Center management.
An evaluation edition already in place can be converted to Standard with a DISM command, without reinstalling.
Active Directory domain controller for users and workstations, file and print server, host for databases and business software, Remote Desktop server: the Standard edition covers these needs for a small company, with two VMs to keep roles separate.
