Windows Server 2025 Standard is Microsoft’s newest server release, supported until 2034. It suits small and mid-sized businesses running a domain controller, file server or line-of-business apps.
This release brings hotpatching (security updates without restarts, via Azure Arc), a modernized Active Directory with 32 KB database pages, SMB over QUIC and stricter encryption by default. In-place upgrades from Windows Server 2012 R2 onwards are simpler.
The Standard edition covers a server with up to 16 cores and allows two Windows Server virtual machines on top of the Hyper-V host. Heavier virtualization requires additional licenses or the Datacenter edition.
Windows Server 2025 is supported by Microsoft until November 2034, making it the longest-lasting foundation for a new server.
