Windows Server 2022 Standard remains a proven choice for businesses whose applications are certified for this release. Microsoft supports it until October 2031.
This release introduced Secured-core server, TLS 1.3 by default, SMB AES-256 encryption and SMB compression. It is widely certified by vendors of business software, databases and backup tools.
As with 2025, the Standard edition covers 16 cores and two Windows Server virtual machines. Choosing 2022 makes sense when a vendor has not yet certified 2025, or to stay consistent with existing servers.
For a new project with no compatibility constraints, we would rather recommend Windows Server 2025, which is supported three years longer.
