Office 2024 vs Microsoft 365: Buy Once or Subscribe?
Word, Excel and PowerPoint now come two ways: a one-time purchase or a subscription. The Office 2024 vs Microsoft 365 question depends less on price than on how you work. Here is a plain comparison.
Side by side
| Office 2024 (one-time) | Microsoft 365 (subscription) | |
|---|---|---|
| Payment | Once | Yearly |
| Devices | 1 PC (or 1 PC or Mac) | 5 at once per person |
| People | 1 | 1 (Personal) or up to 6 (Family) |
| New features | No, security fixes only | Continuously |
| Cloud storage | None | 1 TB OneDrive per person |
| Phone and tablet apps | Limited | Fully usable |
| Copilot AI | No | Yes, under Microsoft’s terms |
| Microsoft support | Until October 2029 | As long as you subscribe |
When the one-time purchase wins
- You work on one computer and do not need syncing.
- You want no recurring costs and no subscription to manage.
- Your needs are stable: letters, spreadsheets, presentations — no AI features required.
- You need Access on a Windows PC: Office 2024 Professional Plus is the edition for that.
On a Mac, or for business use with Outlook, Office Home & Business 2024 is the one-time option.
When Microsoft 365 is worth it
- You use several devices — laptop, desktop, tablet, phone.
- You want files safely in the cloud and easy to share.
- Several people at home need Office: with Microsoft 365 Family, up to six people share one plan, each with their own 1 TB.
- You always want the latest features, including Copilot.
Cost over five years
Do not just compare year one. For one person, a one-time version usually pays for itself against a subscription within two to three years — as long as you need neither cloud storage nor multiple devices. For four or more people in a household, the Family plan is almost always cheaper than four separate one-time licenses.
Do not forget end of support
Office 2024 receives security updates until 9 October 2029. After that it keeps working but is no longer patched. With Microsoft 365 the question never arises: while the plan is active, the apps stay current. If you still use Office 2016 or 2019, you are already without updates; Office 2021 support ends on 13 October 2026.
Verdict
One computer, no cloud, no appetite for subscriptions: Office 2024. Several devices, a family or team, cloud storage: Microsoft 365. Still torn on Office 2024 vs Microsoft 365? Describe your situation on WhatsApp and we will honestly recommend the cheaper option for you.
